Government plans to curb migration

Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman have indicated their intention to curb the number of dependants of Student migrants coming to the UK - a figure that has risen very significantly since 2019. Any plans are however, likely to face a strong backlash from the Higher Education sector. The Russell Group have already warned that proposals to limit foreign students and dependants risks damaging the economy and Britain’s international reputation.

Sunak is a prime minister who prides himself as a fixer, someone who can delve deep into problems and come up with solutions. However, on immigration he may discover, as his predecessors did, that rhetoric and strong intentions hit the hard reality of political impotence.
