Government announcement on leasehold reforms

We are now in March and still no closer to understanding the detail behind the Government's intended form of the law relating to leasehold properties.

The latest announcement, published on 7 January, raises questions and is unclear as to precisely how the law will change and when. Within this note, we provide a brief summary of the proposed reforms, as we understand them.

For some time, those advising clients on leasehold property, and specifically in relation to potential enfranchisement claims (that is to say, claims made by leaseholders for an extended lease of their flat, or for the freehold of their building), have had to temper their advice due to the fact that the law is likely to be the subject of change.
